Rough Idle and Poor Economy? Your Sprinter EGR May Be Clogged

If your diesel Sprinter idles rough, hesitates, or has lost fuel economy, a clogged exhaust gas recirculation valve is a likely cause, especially on vans that run short, cold city routes.

Why the EGR Clogs

The EGR valve recirculates a portion of exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures. That exhaust carries soot, and on stop-and-go routes that never fully warm the engine, the soot cakes up and sticks the valve.

Symptoms of a Stuck EGR

Watch for these signs:

  • Rough or surging idle
  • Hesitation under acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • An EGR-related fault code such as P0401

Cleaning vs Replacement

We remove and inspect the valve. If it is only carboned up, a thorough cleaning restores function. If it is mechanically worn or seized, we replace it. Either way, we check the EGR cooler for leaks while we are in there and reset the adaptations.
